Advent is the first season of the Church year and begins on the fourth Sunday before Christmas ending on Christmas Eve. This time is filled with hope and expectation as we are preparing for the coming of Jesus, the Christ-Child at Christmas and also the final coming of Christ at the end of our age. The word comes from the Latin and means “coming.” The colors we use for vestments and Mary, Jesus’ mother are blue for the waters of creation and our own baptisms. The season is often marked with the lighting of an Advent Wreath in which each of four candles are lit on successive weeks. Many people have Advent Wreaths at home for family devotions.
